Our Farm And History
Hello and welcome from the Mackenzie Family! We live at Rootfield Farm on the beautiful Black Isle in the heart of the Highlands and launched Black Isle Dairy in 2013.
I’m a fourth-generation dairy farmer and along with my wife, daughters and small team, make artisan dairy products, including award winning gelato-style ice cream, natural yoghurt and whole unhomogenised milk, available to buy from our Self-Service Farm Shop. Our traditional mixed herd of Holsteins, Ayrshires and Jerseys spend six months grazing on gently sloping grasslands above the Strathconon Valley and are milked by state-of-the-art robots.
The happy herd provides the luscious whole milk for all Black Isle Dairy’s products, which are also available to buy from selected Highland outlets.

You’ll find the largest selection of ice cream and sorbet flavours, including limited edition seasonal tubs, little and large tubs, as well as milk ‘on tap’ and lots of lovely artisan products, from freshly roasted coffee and local honey to Highland cheese and handmade crackers.
Bread & Croissants
Freshly baked Sourdough, Multigrain and Farmhouse White breads are delivered twice a week (Tuesday, Friday) by The Bakery, Inverness, with croissants and white rolls also available on a Friday.
Bean buffs, Inverness Coffee Roasters, have created a bespoke blend just for us that goes perfectly with our creamy milk. Roasted fresh every month and ground for cafetieres, the BLACK ISLE DAIRY BLEND is smooth, full and mellow.
